CHARITABLE GIVING WITH
RETIREMENT PLAN ASSETS
If you are like a lot
of people, you would like to make a significant gift to
the National World War II Museum. However, many of your
assets are held in an IRA or a retirement plan, and you
want to make sure that those assets last as long as you
need them.
What you may not know is that you can name the National
World War II Museum beneficiary of an IRA, qualified retirement
plan, or non qualified deferred compensation payments.
In addition to the great feeling you get by making a gift
to support the National World War II Museum, you retain
control of the assets and may save taxes down the road
when you make the Museum the beneficiary of retirement
plan assets.
HOW TO NAME THE MUSEUM AS BENEFICIARY OF A RETIREMENT
PLAN
- Request from your employer or plan administrator
a beneficiary change form.
- Consult with an attorney or financial advisor and
obtain your spouse’s approval if necessary.
As when you modify a will, changing a beneficiary
designation can have significant tax and estate planning
consequences, so it should be completed only after
you have discussed the matter with the professionals
who understand your particular situation.
- In the appropriate blank on the form, use the following
or similar language: “The National World War
II Museum Foundation, Inc., taxpayer identification
number 72-1200790, for the general support of The
National World War II Museum, located at 945 Magazine
Street, New Orleans, Louisiana.” If there isn't’
enough room on the form, simply include an attachment.
Be certain to ask the plan administrator if there
are any additional requirements to effect the change
of beneficiary.
- Complete the form as instructed and send it to
the appropriate parties (don’t forget to keep
copies for your records and to send one to the Museum).
